What is an EIN?

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is used to identify a business entity. An EIN is also commonly referred to as a federal tax identification number or simply a tax ID.

An EIN is used by most business entities as their Tax Identification Number (TIN). However individuals and sole proprietors may use their Social Security number for TIN purposes.

[Q 10]

Do you have a tax id record for every business in the United States?

No. While we have a comprehensive and ever growing database of over 12 million EINS we do not have every tax id in the nation. We estimate there are approximately 25 – 30 million businesses in the nation. Individuals and sole proprietors are not required to have an EIN and can use their Social Security number for their business tax identification purposes. So we would not have records for these types of small businesses.

Our EIN Database lends itself better to capturing information on more established companies. We have in-depth coverage of major companies, middle markets and non profits. However if you are looking for a small or new company with less than 20 employees or newer than 4 years then currently FEINSearch.com will give you a 10% or less match rate due to these factors.

[Q 11]

Does every search find an EIN record?

No. One reason you may not be able to find the EIN you are looking for is because it is a small business. Please see the question above for more details on this. Another reason you may not be able to locate the EIN or company you are searching for is because of the search criteria entered. In other words, we were not able to find a match based on the information entered.

A couple of tips to help you get the best from your tax id search include: Search using only a portion of the Business Name by using the ‘Company Name Starts With’ search option. For example, a search for ‘Rea’ will match ‘Realtor,’ ‘Realty,’ and ‘Real’ etc.

Searching for a specific business with just a zip code often won’t yield a match, Try searching with a combination of both the ‘Company Name Starts With’ and State options.

Also take a moment to review the search data you entered for accuracy prior to clicking the Search button. Having a typo will lead to no match or an incorrect match.
